Web Hosting But Only If Your a SAM Broadcaster user?

An advert popped up on a forum a couple of days back for Shoutcast Streaming’s samPHPweb & samHTMLweb Web Hosting package.

Is it just me or does the advert actually sound like they only want to host your website if your a SAM Broadcaster user?

Doesn’t sound to me like they would host your website if you were using other software such as RadioDJ

Looking at the price of this website hosting service it’s not that expensive but you could probably do it yourself cheaper.

You could just set up a web server using WAMP on your home PC pointing your domain to your IP and take requests that way.

Or you could rent a VPS server from around $1.25 a month with a hell of a lot more storage space.

Hosting your own website gives you much more control over things especially when you run your own VPS.

You control what ports you have open etc. Unlike SAM Broadcaster RadioDJ only requires 1 port (SQL 3306) to be open for requests.

I started out with an Apache web server on my PC about 11 years ago and it worked great at the time.

In this day and age most broadband connections are pretty stable and fast.

So it shouldn’t be a problem hosting your own website on a home PC.

If you do go a for a VPS, have a look round. There are some pretty¬†¬†but choose what’s best for you and your location.

We have a self managed VPS and it’s usually rock solid and performs like a star. However every server has its limits and sometimes there are outages beyond our control.

It’s really not that hard running your own website. Once you learn how to get it working properly you’ll wonder why you ever paid a website host in the first place.

Remember when it comes to learning stuff like setting up your own web server or VPS Google is your friend not your enemy!

The information is out there if you search hard enough.

If Shoutcast Streaming is only pandering to SAM Broadcaster PHP/HTML users then that would be a shame as I could have pointed a few users of RadioDJ in his direction.

N.B: Running a home web server is dependant on external factors such as your upload & download speeds if you have a poor broadband connection then it may be a better option to look at hosting your website on a VPS.

Before anyone has a go at me!

I’m just pointing out that there are other “alternatives” when it comes to hosting a website/server. You don’t have a monopoly on website hosting!

Unlimited Listeners? My Arse!

Yesterday I was made aware of an advert that had popped up on a forum for a company called Guru streaming.

So I went and had a look at the website.

While you are greeted with a very smart looking website when you actually get to the price plans your in for a shock!

$15.00 a month gets you 50GB of Transfer 250MB of storage and Oh Look “Unlimited Listeners”

If you decide that’s not enough for you you can always go for their “Diamond” package.

Which as you can see is a massive whopping $189.00 a month with 20GB storage (AutoDJ) and 2TB of data transfer with (Oh Look again) “Unlimited” listeners.

There is NO such thing as “Unlimited” when it comes to a server they all max out processing power and bandwidth eventually.

Why do these shoutcast streaming hosts feel the need to take the piss out of customers with packages that are just very poor value for money?

We pay just $11.95 a month for a self managed VPS With 150GB of storage space and 4TB bandwidth and I used to run my shoutcast servers on that.

Before you sign up for a shoutcast host do your homework. There are far better and cheaper shoutcast hosts out there. Read customer reviews and stuff like that.

Don’t be taken for a ride by a fly by night company who offer “Unlimted Listeners” then cap your monthly bandwidth

Always go for a package that just has listener limits that way you know the company has enough bandwidth for you to stream to your listeners sucessfully!
