Sam Broadcaster Lots Of Bugs?

Recently read a post on a forum where someone was listing the radio software they had worked with over the years.

When it came to SAM Broadcaster he had this to say.

“I don’t care what anyone says there is so much evidence that this piece of software was never intended for radio it is buggy and crashes and has no place in a radio studio”

We’ve had SAM Broadcaster crash on us more than once while trying to run a radio stream.

Back when SAM Broadcaster was on v2.7.9 it crashed that often that it ended up losing me my regular slot on a radio station. Which in turn made me doubt my ability to manage a live show. Gee thanks for that SAM you piece of S**T!

You see it’s not just us that think SAM Broadcaster isn’t fit for purpose in the world of radio automation software.

It was 1999/2000 when I was first introduced to SAM Broadcaster found it difficult to use on v1.3

SAM was a product conceived & designed in 1999 by some college students & hobby broadcasters & hasn’t seen a great deal of development.

“SAM Broadcaster has no place in the world of radio automation software”

We’ve tried the newer versions and it just seems to be the same OLD program with very few new additions.

SAM Broadcaster still has the same bugs/issues the program had back in 2002/2003.

Our biggest bug bears about the problems with SAM Broadcaster:

The database goes wrong with tables randomly crashing.
The encoders buffered a lot even with a decent upload speed.
Clockwheel rotations failed to load tracks even though they had enough music to choose from.
The program would randomly crash without warning.
PAL scripts used far too much of the CPU sometimes locking the PC up altogether if they were badly written.

SAM Broadcaster has never been a program you could use to run a professional radio station with.

It was designed for hobby broadcasters who maybe get 10/15 listeners but not for a station that has 100’s or 1000’s of listeners.

As the original post stated “It is buggy and crashes”

When we used SAM Broadcaster 4.x.x we had to keep a constant watch over it just to make sure it hadn’t crashed or stopped encoding.

There are better options for streaming a radio station with nowadays.

Namely Radio DJ free radio automation software.

RadioDJ free radio automation software

We can just leave RadioDJ to the streaming without having to worry or keep checking to see if it’s still streaming.

One user of RadioDJ has had over 12 months of uptime on an XP laptop.

If people stopped paying Spacial Audio for their products then maybe Triton Digital would get the message that SAM Broadcaster isn’t wanted anymore.

“STOP buying SAM Broadcaster from Spacial Audio. You are only paying them to code bad software”

Sam Broadcaster Clockwheel Failure

Just seen a post on the Spacial forums from a user complaining that they have had a “SAM Broadcaster clockwheel failure”

When a clockwheel failure happens in the program, SAM Broadcaster only plays station ID’s instead of playing music from the categories the user has specified within the clockwheel rotation setup.

This has been a huge problem with SAM Broadcaster ever since the early versions of the SAM Broadcaster 2.x.x series.

Why Is Sam Broadcaster Crashing?

Someone recently made a search “Why is my SAM Broadcaster crashing?”

We’ve also noticed these search terms pop up on our dashboard.

“SAM Broadcaster 4.9.1 crashes on Windows 10”
“SAM Broadcaster crashing windows 7”
“SAM Broadcaster crashes after one song”
“SAM Broadcaster crashes without warning”
“SAM Broadcaster Pro keeps crashing after a few songs”
“SAM Broadcaster keeps freezing”

We often see people saying things like this about the lack of stability with SAM Broadcaster.

“We’re running SAM Broadcaster Pro on Windows 7, It often crashes and sometimes won’t restart after a computer reboot which means we have to reinstall the program from scratch”

samcrashw10

“I have SAM Pro on two laptops neither will work because of constant problems with your software crashing”

Reasons Not To Use Sam Broadcaster

Reasons why you shouldn't use SAM Broadcaster

We can think of quite a few reasons you might want to choose an alternative to SAM Broadcaster, but here’s a collection we’ve put together.

Lousy Customer Support

When you pay $$$ for software you would expect help and support if something went wrong.

When SAM Broadcaster goes wrong (and it will) don’t expect to get much help from Spacial support:

@spacial. The worst tech support you will ever receive. An entire day went by, downgraded my urgency and now nothing is working. Thanks.

AnimeAMAZE (@animeamaze) March 9, 2015

@spacial I have had an URGENT technical support ticket open since Monday (Request #76899) with little to no help accept acknowledge receipt

Shawn Quinn (@RealShawnQuinn) October 7, 2015

The Spacial support department sends users the same old canned replies without actually helping anyone. Even the forums and social media accounts are staffed by people who don’t really care. The biggest complaint we see is from users having activation issues with their software and Spacial support not answering users tickets.

They promised to sort the customer service department out in 2013 & as far as we can see it still hasn’t happened.

The support department is supposed to be open 4 am to 4 pm CST (UTC-5), but they seem to work/reply when they feel like it!

Quality and stability of the code

SAM Broadcaster is prone to crashing or freezing for no reason whatsoever

SAM Broadcaster has always had very poor stability and reliability we had nothing but headaches while trying use SAM.

Not a week goes by without us seeing someone somewhere on social media or a forum complaining about major issues with SAM.

There have also been reports of people missing their regular radio shows because the program wouldn’t co-operate.

“Things like that should never happen with radio automation software”

The price

Spacial charge $299-$699 for SAM Broadcaster. The program was originally made up from freely available Winamp plugins.

SAM required Winamp to perform certain back end functions in v1.3 (Back in 1999) and was also prone to crashing without warning especially if you tried adding a large folder of music.

Since v2 SAM Broadcaster has been priced at $299 & the latest studio versions of SAM Broadcaster can cost up to $699

The price hike between the Pro and Studio versions means terrestrial (FM/AM) stations can now use their software, where as before it was restricted to just Internet radio.

(Note: You may not be given permission to use SAM Broadcaster in your country of origin)

Although we guess most terrestrial radio stations probably use software that costs thousands of $$$ NOT some badly designed college project that’s never worked as it was intended.

We really can’t see where the “value” is in the program it’s just NOT worth the $$$ Spacial Audio ask for it.

The database structure

SAM Broadcaster seems to have a very badly written database structure which will also crash without warning if you don’t meticulously look after it. A database shouldn’t require more than backing up and a little light housekeeping.

When we first used the software we found we were having to rebuild the database every few days/weeks it became tiresome. Nothing much appears to have changed.

“Coding a website for SAM Broadcaster was a nightmare, It needn’t be difficult, It just is!” (TechMonkey)

The encoders

We’ve yet to see the encoders within SAM Broadcaster stream properly. The encoders are prone to buffering even if you have a reliable connection.

They even buffered with a local shoutcast server on a home network, that’s how poorly coded they are!

“Unable to send data fast enough Encoding paused till buffer clears…”

We have yet to encounter buffering issues like this with other free encoding software.

PAL (Playlist Automation Language) scripts

Besides PAL scripts being difficult to program, PAL scripts are well known for crashing SAM Broadcaster due to the amount of memory leaks they cause (Especially if they’re written incorrectly!)

Racing audio

This a known issue with SAM Broadcaster that speeds up the file that is currently playing. It’s a known bug from at least 13 years ago that has never been addressed.

Windows 10 compatibility

Versions of the 4.x.x series of SAM Broadcaster will not work on Windows 10 (Even in compatibility mode)

The fact SAM Broadcaster 4.x.x won’t work on Windows 8/10 is down to a change in the way the program requires activation.

However it isn’t just us that think SAM Broadcaster isn’t worth the $299 Spacial Audio ask for the program.

Save yourself the cash and the headaches by using Radio DJ FREE radio automation software.

Radio DJ is a FREE radio automation program that works 100 times better than SAM Broadcaster.

We know of someone running 4 radio stations with 4 copies of RadioDJ free radio automation software with NO issues. Another user has had RadioDJ v1.8.2 running 24/7 for over 12 months on a laptop.

We guess that says everything people need to know about RadioDJ free radio automation software!

RadioDJ is really reliable the only time we have to restart the program is when Windows updates require the computer to be restarted.

“You don’t have any silly restrictions with RadioDJ, You can use it where you want when you want and run as many copies of the software that you require”

In the unlikely event that something goes wrong with RadioDJ there is a great support network on the RadioDJ Community forums.

STOP paying Spacial Audio $$$ for their badly coded & overpriced software. You will only end up regretting it!

We wish we’d never used or paid for for the software in the first place.

Cracked Versions Of Sam Broadcaster

Cracked Versions of SAM Broadcaster?

We’ve noticed a rise in people offering & searching for illegal cracked versions of SAM Broadcaster.

Over the past couple of years 56,451 people have actively looked for a SAM Broadcaster patch/key/crack according to Google analytics!

“It seems people think it’s OK to have cracked/pirated versions of SAM Broadcaster”

No it isn’t OK in any way, shape or form.

SAM Broadcaster costs a lot of $$$ to subscribe to, Even when you do subscribe the software is leased to you… You still don’t own it outright.

Why bother with an illegal/cracked/warez copy of SAM Broadcaster anyway?

SAM Crack

You won’t be able to crack/patch the newer versions of SAM Broadcaster no matter how hard you try. Spacial Audio have coded something into the newer versions of SAM, To stop it from being altered/cracked.

“Plus the Spacial Audio user zone is the ONLY place where you can download a FULL version of the software that can be unlocked via a registration key. DEMO versions of the software can not be unlocked, even if you have a valid key.”

By downloading cracked/pirated copies of software you are also opening your PC up to attacks from ransom-ware/malware or other evil nasty Trojans and viruses.

Most of the SAM Broadcaster patches we tested in the past had some really nasty malware in them.

You wouldn’t want someone holding your PC to ransom just because you’ve downloaded a cracked version of some really dodgy software now would you?

You don’t need a SAM Broadcaster Crack when you have RadioDJ

radiodj-screenshot-compressor

Save yourself the hassle of having a version of SAM Broadcaster that won’t work as intended and download RadioDJ by clicking on the picture below.

“Radio DJ is a FREE studio automation program & it does a far better job at radio automation than any cracked/warez/pirated versions of SAM Broadcaster ever could”

You can find out how to install RadioDJ Here

No keys – No patches – No warez

Just free software that will never let you down.

Remember: NO ONE likes software pirates.

A Fool And Their Money!

By now you are probably aware that I dislike a program called SAM Broadcaster made by Spacial Audio LLC.

SAM2Broadcaster

Let me explain a little as to why I hate it so much:

I discovered Internet radio back in 1999/2000 time when I first started using the Internet. Although It was 2002 before I got chance to actually DJ on the Internet.

(I had played with SAM Broadcaster v1.3 when I first looked into Internet radio but my station never happened)

One of the stations I listened to was advertising for DJ’s so I signed up & ended up with regular weekly radio show.

I had to use SAM Broadcaster v2.7.9 (Streaming Audio Manager) to do my shows with.

Despite being talked through the setup of the program it was fiddly to setup for a computer novice like me. I’d never worked with MySQL up until that point either.

The program never worked as it should & more often than not it would crash or the encoders would buffer during a live show. The crashing & buffering issues actually lost me the DJ position on the radio station.

I put up with SAM Broadcaster and it’s little quirks for just over 8 years.

The final straw came on New Year’s Day 2011 when an error message similar to the one below popped up and SAM Broadcaster was only playing station jingles. Instead of playing music. It’s what’s known as a “Clockwheel” failure.

It wouldn’t play any songs yet the clockwheel rotation had more than enough songs/artists to choose from.

We had 7+ days of music for it to choose from & we had title separation set at 1440 minutes (24 Hours) and artist separation at 240 minutes. So lack of available songs couldn’t have been the cause of the issue.

SAM Broadcaster just wouldn’t do what it was designed to do and that’s to stream/play music. Enough was enough!

“We gave it up as a bad job & I was truly fed up to the back teeth with the software not working as it should!”

Around late 2010 we discovered a piece of software called RadioDJ free radio automation software.

I decided to switch to it after the clockwheel failure in SAM Broadcaster.

We instantly liked the program & found it easy to use. It held up for a lot longer than SAM Broadcaster ever could.

(The record stands at 12+ months uptime)

We swear by RadioDJ as a radio automation program. RadioDJ has NEVER let us down & it’s always been there and worked everytime we’ve gone to work with it.

RadioDJ has taken all of the stress out of automating the music. It just works as an automation program should.

We doubt anyone will want to put up with SAM Broadcaster and its issues, Especially now RadioDJ can do the same job (Only Better!) for FREE.

Before you think about paying out $$$ for SAM Broadcaster have a look at RadioDJ. You may be pleasantly surprised by how good the free stuff works.

Remember a “Fool and their money” are easily parted!

Despite claims by Spacial Audio in their blog posts RadioDJ doesn’t come with any catches or nasty hidden fees

Its 100% FREE for use by any DJ or radio station in the world.

Sam Broadcaster Unable To Send Data Fast Enough

Anyone who has ever encountered this problem with SAM Broadcaster knows how frustrating it can be when this error message appears in encoders window.

“Unable to send data fast enough Encoding paused until buffer clears”

When the encoders in SAM Broadcaster say “Unable to send data fast enough” It is NOT your internet connection or your computer at fault.

It’s a major flaw in the SAM Broadcaster encoders which has never been addressed.

If you do a search for the subject on the Spacial Audio forums.

The results extend to 28 pages with users being told that it’s a problem with their connection.

When it’s actually the SAM Broadcaster encoders at fault.

SAM Broadcaster Unable to send data fast enough

We’ve spent long enough testing other standalone encoding software options & they all worked as they should for days and weeks without buffering.

There is an easy solution to this problem.

1) Uninstall Sam Broadcaster from your PC.
2) Download RadioDJ & unzip the RadioDJ folder onto the root of the C:\ drive outside the programs folder.

3) Install RadioDJ as per These Instructions
4) Then you can install either a standalone encoder or you can install the RadioDJ Streaming Plugin

Hopefully you should have no more buffering issues with your stream.

If you do it might be worth having a word with your ISP support department to smooth out any connection problems with your upload speeds.

Also in the unlikely event of you running into any issues then there’s help available on the RadioDJ Community Forum

If you search the RadioDJ forums you might just find your question has been answered before.

No one should have to put up with the encoders in software buffering on them!
