Arrr!! There Be Pirates!

Pirate radio stations are nothing new they’ve been on the go since the 1960s with Radio Caroline …

I can still remember two Scunthorpe DJ’s attempt at a pirate radio station. It was called WLNG & Broadcast on 104.9 FM on Tuesday and Thursday nights in the late 1980s.

There’s very little information about WLNG on Google just a couple of mentions in articles.

Fast forward to the pirate stations of today. It would appear to all intents that Haringey & Hackney Councils in London are having a crackdown on Pirate stations using their properties to broadcast from.

I can see why they’ve had a crackdown some of those aerials in the video below are badly cobbled together. Have to admit they look like complete eyesores on the top of buildings as well.

We would soon notice if a pirate radio station had put an aerial on the roof of our building. Mind they’d have to gain access to it first.

Our message to the Pirate radio stations being hassled by these Council/Ofcom officials.

“Why be a Pirate station on an FM signal with very little reach?
When you could potentially reach far more people by streaming on the Internet”

Internet Radio is the future of broadcasting & it’s not all that difficult to start your own online radio station.

You just need a decent PC (1GB of RAM would do) decent broadband connection, decent microphone and mixing desk, along with decent streaming/automation software and a Shoutcast/Icecast server.

We know of a lot of radio stations on the Internet that have been on the go for years and as far as we’re aware they have never owned a licence to stream.

So it seems NO one really checks if your legit or not on the Internet.

In any case you could just move your server to another IP if the authorities were snooping on your broadcasts.

It’s amazing how popular streaming online radio has become in the last 10 years. So it’s little wonder there are so many pirate stations.

Hopefully you shouldn’t have to worry about your transmission equipment or aerials being seized by officials.

Unless you were broadcasting some really bad content!

Sexism/Homophobia/Racism/Islamophobia/Jihad are definite no go areas when it comes to broadcasting even if you’re a pirate broadcasting from a bedroom.

Remember at the end of the day no one wants to listen to crap.

You can find some FREE shoutcast/icecast hosting by searching Google for “Free Streaming servers”

Alternatively you can pay a Shoutcast/icecast host for a server from around $2/3 a month. Do your research on Google and steer clear of hosts who offer “Unlimited Listeners”

“There is NO such thing as unlimited listener slots! All servers max out their bandwidth/processing power eventually”

Stability? RadioDJ has that in Spades

I’ve been into Internet radio for a long time now. In all those years I’ve learnt a lot of things about streaming on the Internet.

It’s been a fun thing to learn about. Other times it’s been hard work because software wasn’t doing the job it was designed for.

“The biggest issue we’ve encountered when it came to the Internet radio automation software offerings has always been the lack of stability or reliability, We could never get a stream to hold up for longer than 2 days with certain software”

We don’t appear to have that problem with *RadioDJ FREE radio automation software.

We began using RadioDJ v1.3.7.0 about 5 and a half years ago now and that worked like a Trojan running our stream.

The newer versions of RadioDJ are far more powerful than 1.3.7.0 was.

RadioDJ just sits quietly in the background automating my local music stream. (Gave up running an online stream ages ago)

“We know of one user who has gone 234 days (Roughly 7.5 months) without having to restart RadioDJ”

So if you’re looking for a stable & reliable DJ program for use on Internet radio then RadioDJ is what you need.

Once you get past the Installation of RadioDJ the program just runs and runs without the need for a restart.

Usually the only reason RadioDJ needs a restart is because of Windows updates.

We’ve tried nearly all the available software for Internet radio and nothing comes close to RadioDJ.

Pirate V’s Legal

Certain people in the Internet radio community reckoned we ran a pirate radio station & some people also reckon that I have done work for pirate stations in the past.

Nope completely wrong on all counts!

The stations I’ve worked for in the past were all legit and above board. I once got asked to work for a pirate station in Scunthorpe (WLNG) in the late 1980s but also declined that offer.

When it comes to streaming a station I’ve only ever streamed music for me to listen to via a private internal shoutcast server (Which we no longer need because we’ve bought a Chromecast)

What really gets my back up on this subject is the fact that there are so many stations listed on various radio guide websites who have never owned a licence to stream.

Some of those stations have been going over 14 years. I won’t name names but you just know a pirate station on the Internet when you come across one.

No one it seems pulls them up about not having a licence for their music.

I am still streaming my music via a private server Chromecast and I intend to carry on doing so.

Now piss off and find someone else to harass!
