Running A Database Needn’t Be Scary!

I’ve just joined a “radio station automation” group on Facebook, Don’t normally bother with groups on FB but this one was recommended to me.

I saw this post on there last week:

What are you scared of? Running a database/MySQL server need not be scary…

We’re guessing this person was trying to install a really old version of the software.

MariaDB 3 Years And Counting

Just been looking back on various posts on my Facebook page from around this time 3 years ago.

I realised it was around June 2014 when we were first made aware of MariaDB an alternative to Oracle MySQL

Since that first install 3 years ago things have ran smoothly. We’ve not had to rebuild the RadioDJ database from scratch once.

What A Difference 5 Years Makes

It’s now over 5 years since we first discovered & started using RadioDJ radio automation software.

RadioDJ 1.3.7.0

RadioDJ 1.6.0

We started looking for another automation solution because SAM Broadcaster just wouldn’t work as it was supposed to.

Why Does RadioDJ Rely On A MySQL Database?

Saw this post on a forum on a post about RadioDJ free radio automation software.

“The biggest fail with RadioDJ to me is the reliance upon a MySQL database”

So Why does RadioDJ rely on a MYSQL database?

RadioDJ requires MySQL to run some backend functions such as Rotations/Playlists/Events and even listener requests.

The fact RadioDJ relies on an SQL database for some of it’s functions is actually one of it’s PLUS points.
