Don’t Forget the Sample Rate

Recently started seeing posts from people on the RadioDJ forums saying they couldn’t get the Altacast encoder plugin working.

With an error message that looked like this.

It then transpired that the users concerned hadn’t entered the “Samplerate” when setting the encoder up.

In order to stream with the newer version of the Altacast plugin for RadioDJ you need to specify a samplerate.

The samplerate is usually set at 22050 or 44100 depending on how you want your stream to sound.

General rule of thumb: If the stream is 96kbps or below then the samplerate would be 22050 If the stream is 128kbps and above the samplerate should ideally be 44100.

That’s all there is to it just make sure you’ve set your Server iP, port, bitrate, passwords and server type correctly & you should be good to go.

Happy streaming!

SAM Broadcaster Bad Audio

Going through Shoutcast and tuning into a few random radio stations.

Some of them were quite good and sounded brilliant. Some of them however did not.

Digging a bit deeper and looking on their shoutcast server pages the reason for the poor audio quality on some of the stations was immediately clear.

“They were either using badly ripped mp3 files or the sound processing in SAM Broadcaster wasn’t set up properly either way they sounded naff and annoying.

You just know a SAM Broadcaster station when you come across one. Usually the badly coded website or #audiorealm on the Shoutcast server page gives it away.

I could never get a decent sound out of SAM Broadcaster even testing on the 3.x.x & 4.x.x versions with the built in onboard AGC

(The AGC in SAM Broadcaster is a rehash of a Winamp plugin called “SoundSolution”)

The audio would never sound right in SAM Broadcaster no matter how many different settings you tried.

“The onboard AGC in SAM Broadcaster was badly programmed and not a lot of thought was given as to what the end result would be. That is poor sounding audio”

I eventually switched back to my stream which is powered by RadioDJ and it sounds 10 times better than those few stations that were using SAM Broadcaster.

With RadioDJ You get a great well programmed automation application with great sound from the onboard audio processing plugin.

If you don’t believe me Try RadioDJ out for yourself with these audio processing settings.

If your audio files are ripped at the right bitrate and format you should notice a huge difference in audio be between SAM Broadcaster and RadioDJ.
