SAM Brodcaster Can’t Tell The Time

When it comes to Internet radio we find it’s always best to use .mp3 files ripped at 320kbps CBR (constant bit rate)

You would then expect those files should then show the correct duration in the audio software you are using.

Alas It would appear SAM Broadcaster has issues with the duration of some files.

This user has tried converting and even rerecording the track and the program still shows the incorrect countdown/remaining time.

SAM Broadcaster wrong length on mp3 files

As you can see from the picture below SAM Broadcaster thinks “The Beatles” tracks all have rather long duration times.

This has been a problem within SAM Broadcaster since the early days (v2.7.7) even with properly ripped .mp3 files.

I’ve found if SAM Broadcaster doesn’t like an .mp3 file it tends to show the time as ??:??

One of the SVS volunteers has even tried to blame it on the users badly ripped .mp3 files.

It’s NOT the way your music files are ripped it’s very much a SAM Broadcaster problem.

I’d imagine it also does this with the other supported file formats.

RadioDJ doesn’t tend to have this issue with properly ripped tracks.

RadioDJ detects and shows the correct duration/time for of all of them.

RadioDJ has a far better track/cue point editor & you can use custom intro/fade out markers.

RadioDJCuePointEdit

This is just another reason to ditch SAM Broadcaster if the program can’t do something as simple as show the correct duration of files.

It’s another problem that the Spacial Audio development team are probably aware of but NOT in a hurry to fix.

RadioDJ Stable Database

It’s June 2014 since I last decided to rebuild my RadioDJ SQL database from scratch.

RadioDJ free radio automation software

In all the years I’ve been doing Internet Radio this is the longest I’ve gone without having to rebuild a SQL database.

Some of the credit for the stability also needs to go to MariaDB we’ve found it’s a lot more stable and easier to setup than Oracle MySQL.

When I used other automation software I was having to rebuild the database from scratch every other week as it was just so unstable and badly written…

Plus that piece of software didn’t have a backup tool so when the database went wrong you lost all your data which sucked!

The RadioDJ database setup tool takes a daily backup of your MySQL data and is easily restored if the worst should happen.

TIP: Backup your RadioDJ database to USB pen drive so you don’t lose data should your PC go wrong
“The only issue we’ve had with the database in the last 18 months was after a power cut which caused some of the tables to crash and was easily solved using HeidiSQL to quickly repair them.”

Thankfully power cuts don’t happen that often where we live.

Other than that one issue with a power cut the RadioDJ database has been amazingly rock solid & reliable.

IF you haven’t discovered RadioDJ free radio automation software yet what are you waiting for?

RadioDJ is FREE for use by any DJ or radio station anywhere in the world and comes with no nasty hidden fees or catches.

It really is as you see it with no activation’s needed or keys required to unlock the full benefits of the program.

“If you’ve been having database stability issues with other automation software, MAKE THE SWITCH you’ll be amazed at what FREE & stable radio automation software can do for you and your radio station”

It’s a pleasure to use radio automation software when it works as it’s designed.

Bye Bye Louis Louw

Just been for a look at the Spacial Audio blog and saw that Louis Louw is to step down as CTO (Chief Technology officer)

Louis Louw steps down as CTO

Louis Louw has been in charge of Spacial for over 16 years now and you would have thought as one of the co-founders he’d have worked harder on the development of the program to iron out all the glaring bugs and random crashing issues?

When in reality they just lurched from one badly written version of SAM Broadcaster to another.

We guess that now means Spacial Audio are only based in the US and Canada with Louis stepping down as CTO they’ll lose their South Africa offices though they haven’t listed South Africa on their Twitter account for a while now.

Maybe now the development team should be able to make SAM Broadcaster the stable reliable program it was supposed to have been?

We won’t hold our breath on that one though… The software was that badly coded in the past we guess it’ll be difficult for them to track down and find the bugs that need fixing.

We doubt anyone will miss Louis Louw as CTO.

I personally think he’s held the software back for years with very little in the way of development while still raking in the cash from users purchasing software from them.

Bye Bye Louis Louw you really were awful at listening to what your customers wanted from a piece of software.

RadioDJ is Dodgy?

When we see someone on social media having an issue with SAM Broadcaster we try and let them know there’s a better free alternative.

Yesterday we suggested RadioDJ to someone on Twitter and they came back with…

“Oh but I’ve heard RadioDJ is dodgy?”

Where people are getting the idea RadioDJ is “dodgy” from we don’t know.

We know of a few blogs posts from other software/hosting companies who try to make out RadioDJ is inferior because of the fact it’s free.

Those blog posts are just a pack of lies!

Fake Stats on Shoutcast?

Fake Stats on Shoutcast?

A year and a half after this article was originally written I still don’t get it!

Search term used on Google analytics “Buy fake shoutcast listener script”

faking

Why is it that some stations on Shoutcast seem to want to fake their listener stats?

Shoutcast listings

As you can see from the picture the topstations are claiming to have 13,000 listeners.

When I looked at their PLS file they appear to have a cluster of shoutcast servers all on the same IP range all with around 80/90 listeners.

It’s not exactly rocket science to work out that listener figures somewhere are being messed around with.

It seems to me that it’s not just that one station but quite a few meddling with their listener figures.

This isn’t the first time I’ve seen online radio station owners blatantly lying about their listener figures.

A couple of years ago one station owner was bragging that he had 20,000 listeners a week.

When I monitored his shoutcast server the peak was about 46 listeners.

Why bother faking stats? It will only make you and your so called online radio station look silly.

SAM Broadcaster Mac SQL Problems

SAM Broadcaster for the Mac has now been Scrapped/discontinued by Spacial Audio!

This past few days I’ve seen a few users saying they were having issues when installing SAM Broadcaster Mac (Crossover) edition.

SAM Broadcaster Mac SQL problems

For some unknown reason it appears the crossover version won’t connect to the users MySQL database.

Database installation problems with SAM Broadcaster aren’t just confined to the Mac (Crossover) version.

I had no end of problems trying to get SAM to install the database in the Windows version in the past.

As I said in a previous post…

It appears the SAM Broadcaster Mac (Crossover) version was cobbled together in a rush to get a working release out.

The SAM Broadcaster Mac edition isn’t native Mac software. It’s just the Windows version ported over.

I knew there would be problems when Spacial ported SAM Broadcaster to the Mac.

The Windows version has enough of it’s own issues & bugs to begin with.

Sadly when it comes to the Mac there aren’t that many alternatives when it comes to radio automation software written natively for OS X.

The only other “alternative” I can suggest is installing Windows on Virtualbox on your Mac and have that running a copy of software such as RadioDJ

We realise that’s probably not an ideal solution for most Mac users but we’re afraid its as good as you’re going to get at the moment.

Who knows one day maybe some boffin will come up with a decent “Native” automation software package for the Mac…

Stop paying $$$ for software from Spacial Audio you’re just paying them to lurch from one disaster to another.

SAM Broadcaster Product Activation Offline

Saw this in amongst the search terms on Google analytics recently…

“SAM Broadcaster Product Activation Offline”

It seems the Spacial Audio activation server fell over at some point over the last couple of days which in turn left users struggling to get SAM Broadcaster activated.

Users having issues getting SAM Broadcaster activated are nothing new…

SAM Broadcaster activation issues

The biggest complaint we see about the activation system is the activation servers saying that the users copy of SAM Broadcaster is already activated on 3 PC’s

Even when the user has deactivated the software before they go to reinstall the program on another machine.

The activation servers have been causing users of SAM grief ever since Spacial Audio changed the way people have to unlock their software.

Before users just needed a key code to unlock all the features in SAM Broadcaster.

Spacial Audio introduced the activation requirement back on v4.7.3 in order to cut down the numbers of pirated versions and it’s never worked properly when someone needs to activate their software.

It’s just another reason why RadioDJ is better than SAM Broadcaster.

RadioDJ free radio automation software

RadioDJ doesn’t require key codes or activations in order to work the full program.

RadioDJ Free radio automation download

No more waiting days/weeks for Spacial support to reply back to your query.
No more worrying about a piece of software not activating.
No more worrying about not being able to do a radio show because SAM wouldn’t activate.

Forget SAM Broadcaster and its activation issues causing you problems!

RadioDJ will outperform SAM Broadcaster and there are NO Hidden fees/catches just free working software.

Despite what Spacial Audio might try and make out FREE radio software isn’t anyone’s enemy!

SAM Broadcaster virus infects RadioDJ?

Fired up the PC this morning and looked at user searches on my admin pages and I saw this…

“SAM Broadcaster virus infects RadioDJ”

It sounds to us like this person has downloaded & installed a dodgy patched copy of SAM Broadcaster off some torrent/pirate site which installed some malware on his system & is now interfering with the smooth running of other software such as RadioDJ.

SAM Broadcaster Virus

If this user downloaded SAM Broadcaster from some random pirate/torrent/cracked/warez software site, then the patches used to crack the software are bound to contain nasty Trojans/Malware.

If this user has got malware or a virus on their PC it could be stealing bank details or other sensitive information.

We can guarantee you 100% there’s no way this user has downloaded a dodgy copy of RadioDJ. There are no viruses or malware in RadioDJ…

Malware spy

Marius the author of RadioDJ wouldn’t program something like that into the software.

(Although he does try to protect his code which can sometime throw a false/positive result up from some antivirus software solutions)

Why bother with pirated copies of SAM Broadcaster in the first place? When there is a better FREE alternative.

RadioDJ FREE radio automation software doesn’t require any keys/patches/cracks in order to work the full program.

There are no nasty hidden fees or catches just a fully fledged radio automation program that knocks spots of SAM Broadcaster.

RadioDJ Free radio automation download

(Click on logo to download RadioDJ or right click and “Save Link As”)

What this user needs to do is reinstall his copy of Windows and install RadioDJ instead of this dodgy copy of SAM Broadcaster.

“Unless you’re downloading dodgy software files or visiting dodgy malware infected web pages you don’t really need AV software on a studio production machine Windows defender does a good enough job at keeping our PC safe, Then again we’re not downloading dodgy software”

Stop using pirated software it’s NOT big and it’s certainly NOT clever and it will only cause you grief when you get some nasty Trojan crashing your system.

Mind it sounds like it’s probably too late for this user if a virus is already causing him grief it’s probably already stolen his details/passwords etc…
